| Yellow Jade is is a vibrant gem, primarily a form of nephrite or sometimes jadeite, made of calcium magnesium iron silicate colored by iron oxidation. Because natural yellow hues usually form only on the outer edges or rinds of raw stones and jade boulders through millions of years of iron oxidation, fully yellow jade is quite rare and highly unique. Finding a piece that combines the rich, sunny color with high transparency is exceptionally uncommon. | |
| Nephrite is the more common type of true jade. It occurs in warm, creamy-yellow to amber, to dark golden, to brown shades (often called “butter fat” or “chicken fat” jade in antique markets). It displays a greasy-to-glassy luster. Instead of being flawlessly clear, raw pieces have a natural, fibrous crystalline structure with visible internal lines, subtle inclusions, or minor cracks. High-quality yellow jadeite exhibits an icy, translucent glow when held up to a light source, which helps confirm the depth of the stone. | |
| Real jadeite and nephrite are dense, heavy, and very hard. Authentic stones will feel cool to the touch and should have an uneven, natural distribution of color and visible mineral structure. | |

| Yellow jade is commonly found in Myanmar, China, Japan, and the U.S. (mainly Alaska). Other significant sources include Guatemala, Canada, and Russia. | |
| In Myanmar (Burma), jadeite is particularly found around the Kachin State, yielding stones that can display natural orange, brown, and yellow hues along the “rind” or outside edge of the boulders. | |
| In China, the premier source for high-quality yellow nephrite is the Xinjiang province, particularly the Qiemo and Ruoqiang regions along the Kunlun and Altun mountains. | |

You can collect up to 25 lbs of rocks per day on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. | |
| In Jade Cove, California (located in sourthern Big Sur), there is the only concentrated underwater deposit of quality nephrite jade in the world. The stones are often polished by the ocean and can be found in shades ranging from dark green to translucent yellow and orange. Scour the gravel patches during extreme low tides at Jade Cove Trail or scuba/dive offshore. Because it is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, strict rules apply. You are only permitted to collect loose, detached jade from the shoreline or seafloor using your hands (no blasting or chiseling). You can only take what you can personally carry out. | |
| Washington State (Peshastin Creek and Skagit Riger) has deposits of nephrite jade that can sometimes have yellowish-brown rinds or inclusions. Pan and surface-hunt the river gravels of Peshastin Creek (near Blewett Pass) and the tributaries of the Skagit River (like Finney and Deer creeks). Personal collection on US Forest Service lands is generally allowed, but check directly with the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest office for local daily limits and restrictions. | |
