Description:  Steam distilled from the bright orange flowers, tagetes oil is a popular ingredient in French perfumes. The essential oil has a strong, warm, sweet-herbaceous, pungent aroma with a very powerful fruity undertone, reminiscent of green apple. In aromatherapy, tagetes essential oil can help improve sleep quality, reduce anxiety, and encourage mental clarity. It has sedative qualities that can soothe the neurotic and nervous systems, easing symptoms of stress, anger, panic, and other psychological imbalances.

Deeply skin nourishing and rejuvenating, tagetes oil can help with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, and can also help skin ailments like athlete’s foot, corns, bunions, and calluses.

Tagetes oil can also help ease unwanted muscle spasms.

Mystical Attributes:  Beyond their aesthetic appeal, marigolds have deep symbolic meaning. They are often associated with life and death, making them a perfect choice for Day of the Dead celebration. Marigolds represent the sun’s warmth and light, and their radiant colors guide the souls of the departed back to the world of the living during Día de los Muertos. Marigolds are also seen as a way to offer comfort to the souls of the deceased, as their vibrant petals and earthy fragrance are said to be pleasing to the spirits. This is why you’ll find marigold flower petals strewn on altars, ofrendas, graves, and even in homes during festivities. Families will often scatter marigold petals forming a path from their front doors to the ofrenda waiting within the home.

The Aztecs believed that the musky scent of marigolds carry messages and prayers to the gods.

Smell:  Tagetes has a sweet, fruity, green, almost citrus-like, slightly floral aroma.

Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  To grow marigolds, sow seeds directly in the garden after the last frost, or start them indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. For a succession of blooms, you can plant marigolds throughout the summer.

Marigolds prefer full sun to partial shade and fertile, loose, loamy soil with good drainage. They can also tolerate dry conditions.

Sow seeds 1 inch apart and ½ inch deep. For shorter varieties, space plants 8 inches apart, and 10-12 inches apart for taller varieties.

Water thoroughly after planting. To keep the soil moist and discourage weeds, you can add a 1-2 inch layer of mulch between plants.

Tall marigolds may need staking to keep them upright, even in a sheltered site. Deadhead them to keep them blooming almost non-stop all summer.
