Description:  Shatavari translates to, “who possesses a hundred husbands” or “acceptable to many” or “100 spouses”. It is well known in Ayurveda to prevent aging, increase longevity, and add vigor and vitality.

Shatavari is an Ayurvedic herb that helps promote hair growth. It has anti-inflammatory compounds that can help soothe the scalp and reduce stress, both physical and mental. Reducing stress helps control hair falling out. It is also believed to prevent skin irritation from itchy, flaky scalp, which promotes growth of hair. It also strengthens hair roots by boosting blood circulation.

Shatavari root is also believed to help prevent the breakdown of collagen, which helps maintain the elasticity of skin.

Linked to women’s health in Ayurvedic medicine and considered the main Ayurvedic rejuvenative tonic for women (like Ashwagandha is for men), known as “queen of herbs”, Shatavari promotes positive emotions, enhanced fertility, and regulation of the menstrual cycle. With an estrogenic effect on the female mammary glands and reproductive system, shatavari is also believed to boost postpartum health and enhance production of breast milk in lactating mothers. Shatavari contains estrogenic steroid saponins such as sarsaponin, protodioscin, and diosgenin and is believed to help symptoms of menopause.

Some men use shatavari root to boost athletic performance, build muscle, and increase stamina, virility, libido, energy, sperm count, and sex drive, as well as to help erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. It is believed to increase male reproductive hormones and act as a rejuvenating tonic for the male reproductive system. It is often used by men in combination with ashwagandha to build physique, strength, and sexual performance.

Shatavari root juice is commonly used in parts of India to help cough.

Shatavari has also been identified as an herb to help control symptoms of AIDS. Shatavari strengthens the immune system and it is believed that regular use of the herb will help the HIV-infected person’s body ward off external infections.

Shatavari is usually prepared in teas or tinctures, but is also used in smoothies and taken in supplement capsules.

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is not the same as Asparagus officinalis, which is the type of asparagus that is commonly eaten as a vegetable.

Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is a species of asparagus, a small shrub or woody climber, that is common in Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, and the Himalayas. It grows at a low altitude in the shade and in tropical climates, up to one to two meters tall, and prefers to take root in gravelly, rocky soils in piedmont plains at 1,300-1,400 meters elevation.

The plant has an adventitious root system of tuberous roots and about 100 per plant.

Branches are angular, leaves are like pine needles and 0.4-0.6mm long.

Flowers are white, small, solitary, clustered and uniform in a raceme and have small spikes.

The fruit is a subglobose berry with 1-6 smooth black seeds.

The root is dried after harvesting. Store dried shatavari root in a cool, dark, dry place in an airtight container.
