| Pink black vein rhodonite is a manganese inosilicate mineral famous for its rosy-pink color and striking dark veins. The iconic pink hues come from manganese, while the intricate, abstract black lines are caused by natural surface oxidation of manganese oxides at fracture points. The dark markings are completely natural, resulting from manganese oxide. Some stones can be almost completely black due to heavy oxidation. Colors range from a soft, pale pink to a vibrant rosy-red, always heavily intermixed with black, dark brown, or gray dendritic lines. Rhodonite is highly valued for carvins and beadwork. | In the United States, Plainfield, Massachusetts is one of the most famous locations, specifically at Betts Manganese Mine. The Franklin Mine in Franklin, New Jersey yields a rare zinc-bearing variety of rhodonited called fowlerite, which features deep pink and red crystals alongside black veins and franklinite. Deposits can be found in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado (such as the Sunnyside Mine group near Silverton). Deposits are found scattered across California, but most notably at the Mountain Home prospect in Angeles Oaks (San Bernardino County), the Sherry Ann Mine in San Diego County, and the Sweetwater Mine in Mariposa County. | |
