Palo Santo Wood Magic / Mystical Attributes

Palo Santo is considered powerful because it combines centuries of shamanic tradition with a scientifically proven, high concentration of bioactive compounds. When burned, it releases a rich smoke that simultaneously clears stagnant negative energy and invites grounded, uplifting positivity.

In Spanish, Palo Santo means “Holy Wood”. Part of its magic is that it is enjoyed for its energetically cleansing and healing properties, similar to Sage. But unlike sage, which is often used solely to banish heavy energy, Palo Santo is believed to actively replace it with uplifting light.

It is used as a purification incense. The uplifting and pleasant aroma enhances the vibration of any environment, facilitates creativity, and attracts positive energy. The heartwood is used in aromatherapy, meditation, and energetic purification of space (smudging). It is often burned to clear stagnant, negative energy from a room, a person, or objects like crystals. It is highly prized for resetting the energy of an area to start fresh.

Amazonian shamans have traditionally used its smoke in ceremonies to clear the aura and act as a bridge to higher states of awareness and spiritual connection. Palo Santo is traditionally used in aromatherapy and meditation to reduce stress, which may also result in management of minor pain. The scent of burning wood or diffusing palo santo essential oil activates the olfactory system to help trigger the body’s relaxation response. The wood contains natural organic compounds called terpenes, which are believed to help relieve anxiety, enhance focus, and soothe the mind.

Palo Santo is part of the citrus family and has sweet notes of pine, mint and lemon. The same fragrant compounds that give it its calming scent (like d-limonene) naturally deter mosquitoes and flying insects.

Palo Santo Wood Botany / Cultivation / Harvesting

Palo Santo belongs to the Burseraceae family, making it a close relative to myrrh and frankincense. It is native to Mexico, Central America, northwestern South America from Venezuela to Peru, and the Galápagos Islands. It is found in the seasonally dry tropical forests of Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and eastern and southern Mexico, including the Yucatán Peninsula.

In the United States, Palo Santo can only grow outdoors in the warmest tropical regions, specifically USDA Hardiness Zones 10 to 11 (such as extreme southern Florida, southern Texas, and parts of Hawaii).

Palo Santo trees prefer temperatures between 60°F and 85°F. It must be protected from any temperatures dipping below 50°F. It requires full sun to thrive and needs rich, well-draining soil.

In colder climates, Palo Santo can be cultivated as an indoor or patio plant, and is often grown as a bonsai. For this, use large pots with excellent drainage holes. And the plant needs to be moved indoors with grow lights during winter months. Be aware that wild Palo Santo trees can reach up to 66 feet tall. While indoor growing will severely stunt its growth, it will eventually outgrow its container if not pruned regularly.

Palo Santo is never harvested from living trees, authentic Palo Santo is harvested only after a tree has died naturally and lain on the forest floor for several years (typically 3 to 10). This aging process allows the wood to cure and develop its deep, fragrant essential oils. The wood is typically cut into small, rough, or slender sticks and is incredibly dense with resin.
