Description:  Salt was highly valued in Greece and Rome, being used as currency and traded for slaves. This established the expression, “not worth a pound of salt”. It also gave rise to the word “salary”, in that the Latin word it derived from meant “a sum given to soldiers to buy salt”.

Salt is effective as a preservative because it reduces the water activity of foods. The water activity of a food is the amount of unbound water available for microbial growth and chemical reactions. Salt is commonly used to help preserve meat.

Salt is mainly used as a food additive and seasoning. The major benefits of salt are aiding the balance of electrolytes and fluids, carrying nutrients into cells, regulating acid-base balance, supporting transfer of nerve impulses, regulating blood pressure, and secretion of gastric acid.

Mystical Attributes:  Salts purify environments by attracting and trapping airborne pollutants, dust, and allergens. Water vapor is drawn into the crystals, thus acting somewhat as a dehumidifier, potentially helping respiratory ailments. Speleotherapy (also called “cave therapy”) involves breathing the “cleansed” air inside of salt caves.

Salt has always been used in amulets of protection and banishing due to its cleansing properties.

Salt is poured across doorways and window sills to keep negative and evil entities from entering. Salt creates a magical protective barrier and is used for casting a circle.
