Meadowfoam Seed Oil (Limnathes Alba) – CARRIER OIL

Price range: $14.02 through $21.97 USD

Meadowfoam Seed Oil (Limnathes Alba)

Meadowfoam seed oil is one of the most stable carrier oils available and can extend the shelf life of other oils. Containing over 98% long-chain fatty acids, it is preservative, and can keep other oils from oxidizing and going rancid, even when exposed to heat, light or air.  Meadowfoam seed oil holds aromas very well. It is slightly waxy and closely resembles human sebum, and can be used as a replacement for jojoba oil. Helping lock moisture into the skin and absorbing very quickly, it helps with aging and dry skin, and can help dry chapped lips. The emollient properties also give it potential to keep hair hydrated by locking in moisture, preventing brittleness, tangling, frizz and dullness. It can be applied directly to the skin or hair, or used in products like lotions, creams, lip balms, conditioners, and hair treatments. Meadowfoam seed oil is rich in antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, which can help fight oxidative stress and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also contains linoleic acid, which encourages cell turnover. Meadowfoam seed oil can help calm irritation and redness, making it suitable for sensitive and dry skin types. It’s also especially useful for people with rosacea and eczema. Meadowfoam seed oil contains omega-9 fatty acid, which can protect against sun damage and UV radiation, making it a good addition to sunscreen.

Meadowfoam seed oil is a carrier oil and does not require dilution.

Smell:  Generally odorless, but some say it can have a mild, nutty aroma or a strong, unrefined smell.

Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Meadowfoam is a wildflower native to the western United States, including northern California, southern Oregon, and Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It is an annual herb with white, cup-shaped flowers that are 1-1.5 cm long. It can grow up to 30 cm tall, with leaves that are divided into several lobed or unlobed leaflets. Meadowfoam blooms in May, and at its peak, an acre can produce hundreds of millions of flowers that create a white cloud and heavenly smell.

In the Pacific Northwest, meadowfoam is usually grown as a winter annual and is planted in October after the soil temperature is below 60°F. In areas with colder winters, it can be planted in the spring. Meadowfoam seeds should be sown outdoors in a prepared seedbed after the danger of frost has passed.

Meadowfoam prefers loose, well-drained soil that is moderately fine and firm, with no large clods. Sow seeds by pressing into the soil and cover them lightly.

Meadowfoam needs regular watering to increase flower production. It can tolerate some water stress, but too much heat can cause the seeds to remain dormant and germinate poorly.

Meadowfoam can also be grown in containers. Use fertile, well-drained soil from sandy loam to clay and place in a spot with full sunlight.
