Strawberry Spiritual / Magickal Attributes:
Strawberries are primarily a symbol of love, passion, and romance, owing to their vibrant heart shape and deep red color. However, their meaning shifts depending on context—spanning from purity and religious devotion to temptation and the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures.
In Roman and Norse mythologies, the wild strawberry was sacred to Venus and Freyja, the goddesses of love. European tradition suggests that sharing a “double strawberry” (two berries fused together) with someone is a harbinger of true love or marriage.
In Ancient Rome, strawberries were often consumed during festivities celebrated in honor of Adonis, the mortal lover of the goddess Aphrodite, as according to myth, strawberries grew when Aphrodite’s tears mixed with the blood of the dead Adonis and dropped into the dirt.
In various pagan and modern spiritual practices, carrying dried strawberry leaves is thought to attract wealth, luck, and prosperity.
Because they are some of the first fruits to ripen in the spring, strawberries symbolize rebirth, vitality, and savoring the sweet, simple pleasures of life.
In some traditions, the heart-shaped leaves and seeds represent the three stages of life: youth, adulthood, and old age.
In Renaissance and later art (most famously Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights), strawberries were used to symbolize the fleeting, ephemeral nature of earthly pleasures, as well as temptation and hidden sin.

Description: Strawberries are nutrient powerhouses. Just one cup provides over 100% of your daily Vitamin C and 3 grams of fiber for under 50 calories. One cup of strawberries contains more Vitamin C than an orange. Vitamin C boosts collagen production for anti-aging skin effects, while anti-inflammatory compounds may help ease symptoms of joint pain and osteoarthritis.
High in anthocyanins and flavonoids, strawberries help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, reduce triglycerides, and improve blood vessel function.
Regular consumption of strawberries is linked to slower cognitive decline and a reduced risk of neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.
Historical Uses: immune boosting, lowering cholesterol, mental abilities, memory, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, easing joint pain, osteoarthritis
Taste & Smell: The core flavor of strawberries is a harmonious mix of sweet and sour. A fully ripe strawberry is sweet and succulent, while underripe fruit can be bracingly sour. Much of what we perceive as “strawberry” actually comes from its fragrance. A large portion of the strawberry’s flavor is linked to volatile aroma compounds that trick the brain into registering sweetness even before tasting it. Depending on the variety, they can carry delicate floral, fruity, or candy-like undertones.
Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:
The strawberry is not a true berry, but is a fleshy receptacle bearing multiple fruits on the surface. These are actually achenes, which are small one-seeded fruits with hard coverings that do not split open (or dehisce) when ripe.
Strawberry plants can grow to around one foot in height and are characterized by long arching runners or stolons, which form new plantlets at the tip. These allow the strawberry plant to reproduce vegetatively as well as by seed.
The plant’s short, woody stems and a basal rosette of compound leaves have 3 coarsely toothed leaflets around 2 1/2 inches long. Strawberry’s small, white, 5-parted flowers, are 1/2 to 3/4 inches and occur in small clusters. They flower in May ordinarily, and the fruit is ripe shortly after.
Strawberries grow in sun or in part sun along trails and roadsides, embankments, hillsides, stone- and gravel-laid paths and roads, as well as meadows, young woodlands, sparse forest, woodland edges, and in clearings. Strawberries prefer a fertile, well-drained, moisture retentive soil.
The strawberry plant propagates easily via runners. In summer, separate each runner from the main plant and replant individually into the garden soil.
After the strawberry plant flowers, harvest the leaves and dry them for later use. Store dried strawberry leaves in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
Contraindications & Toxicity:
- Strawberries contain a protein that can cause common allergy symptoms such as hives, itching, rashes, or mouth swelling. People allergic to birch pollen or fruits in the Rosaceae family (like apples, peaches, or plums) may also experience oral reactions to strawberries
- Eating strawberries in large quantities can slow blood clotting, increasing the risk of bleeding or bruising. Because they impact clotting, avoid large amounts of strawberries at least two weeks prior to a scheduled surgery.
- Strawberries are highly acidic and can increase acidity in the body, potentially worsening gastritis or stomach ulcers. Due to natural organic acids, excessive intake can lead to intestinal irritation, bowel flare-ups, or diarrhea in sensitive individuals.
- Strawberries contain sodium oxalate, which can contribute to the formation of kidney stones or exacerbate existing kidney failure.
- Strawberries can affect certain cell transport pumps, increasing the absorption and potential side effects of medications like blood pressure drugs, corticosteroids, or certain antibiotics. Consuming larger amounts of strawberries alongside antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs (blood thinners) may further slow blood clotting.
