Dianthus Spiritual / Magical Attributes : 

• The Greek name of Dianthus translates to “flower of the gods”…dios (meaning “God” or “divine”) and anthos (meaning “flower”). The plant is tied to Artemis. The Goddess of the hunt came across a shepherd playing the flute. Blaming the musician for frightening away her prey, her temper flared, and she gouged out his eyes. Overcome with immediate remorse, her tears fell to the forest floor, and blood-red carnations bloomed where his eyes had landed.

• During the Victorian era, Dianthus was widely used to express gratitude and fascination in non-verbal communication.

Description:  Some variations of Dianthus include Carnations (Dianthus Caryophyllus), Sweet William (Dianthus Barbatus), Chinese Pinks (Dianthus Chinensis), Maiden Pinks (Dianthus Deltoides), Cheddar Pinks (Dianthus Gratianopolitanus), Cottage Pinks (Dianthus Plumarius), Alpine Pinks (Dianthus Alpinus), and Fringed or Large Pinks (Dianthus Superbus).

Smell:  The flowers smell like cinnamon or cloves. Some are intensely fragrant, while others are subtly spicy.

Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Dianthus flowers (Dianthus spp) are native to Europe and Asia, and grow in USDA Hardiness Zones 3-9. When fully grown, the plants are 6-36” tall and up to 24” wide. Over 300 species exist, available as perennials, annuals, or biennials.

Foliage is strappy and grass-like. Leaves can be dark green, silver-green, and blue-green.

Dianthus flowers bloom in shades of white to pinks to fuchsia to dark red. The flowers are often two-toned. The plant blooms from late spring, throughout the summer, and into early fall.

Dianthus is relatively low-maintenance and easy to care for. They can be grown in containers, and taller varieties in larger planters. The plants can be matured from seeds or propagation. Plant in a seed tray a 6-8 weeks before final frost. Barely cover the seeds with soil and keep it consistently moist, but not soggy. Keep the tray in a sunny location for a little over a week while the seedlings germinate. When the seedlings reach 4 inches tall, and after the last frost, plant outside in a lighter soil type in a sunny location.

To grow Dianthus from stem cut propagations, cut 2-3 inches just below a node at an angle from a plant that has bloomed an entire season in June or July. Remove the lower leaves from the cutting. Dip the end of the stem in rooting hormone, then plant in a mix of potting soil and vermiculite (alternatively, place the cutting in a glass of water until roots develop). Cover the pot or glass with plastic wrap to create humidity. Keep the soil moist and the pot in a sunny location. The cutting can be transplanted outdoors or into a larger pot when a new leaf grows. The stems or seedlings should be planted 12 to 18 inches apart for larger varieties, or 6 to 8 inches apart for compact.

Growing from divisions works best for established, clump-forming varieties. Carefully dig up the entire plant in spring or fall. Gently separate the plant into sections with a sharp knife (each with healthy roots and shoots). Water thoroughly when each division is planted.

They need well-draining soil, preferably slightly alkaline with a pH of 6-7. Avoid planting in heavy clay as it will cause root rot. Water only at the base to prevent mildew. Regularly water while germinating and growing. Frequent watering is no longer necessary once established and blooming. Apply liquid fertilizer every four to six weeks or plant with slow-release fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 10-10-10 or 20-20-20. Improve soil conditions by using organic mulch (avoid mulching close to the base or around stems) and applying compost in early spring. Use gravel to suppress weeds.

Full or partial sunlight is essential. Dianthus needs at least six hours of sunlight a day to grow and bloom regularly. For best results, plant where they will receive six hours of morning sun and some afternoon shade.

It is important to deadhead to control growth and encourage bushier growth and production of more flowers. When blooms have faded, cut them off just above the nearest set of healthy leaves, along with any dead or diseased stems or leaves. In the fall, cut back to only a few inches of stem above the soil. The perennial versions of dianthus only last a few years, so be sure to divide and propagate if you want to keep the flowers long-term.

Contraindications & Toxicity:

• Although dianthus flowers are a beautiful addition to your garden, they are minorly toxic to humans. Dianthus flowers have been known to occasionally cause skin irritation, although it may only last for a few minutes. According to Garden Guides, the leaves of this plant are toxic to humans when ingested. On the other hand, the petals of the carnation variety of dianthus flowers can be candied or used as garnishes and can be safely eaten.
• Dianthus flowers are more toxic to dogs and cats than humans. If your dogs or cats ingest dianthus flowers, they may experience mild gastrointestinal distress. To avoid these symptoms, do not plant your dianthus flowers where your pets can access them.
